Humans see everything with their eyes and feel its beauty with their heart. Everything can be beautiful, because beauty is the result of the interpretation of the human mind that can be sensed and when you see it, a feeling of happiness will emerge. However, why is something beautiful capable of making humans happy? What exactly is the meaning of beauty? And how can humans determine which are beautiful and which are not?
Figure 1: Borobudur temple and the surrounding nature
Natural scenery, beautiful face, magnificent architecture and glittering stars in the sky; everything is a form of beauty. Beauty is intangible and cannot be measured because beauty is only in our minds, just as we see a form, color, proportion, sound which makes us feel better and happier.
Figure 2: Ring with sparkling diamonds
Beauty has always been with humans for a long time, where previous humans always made tools and souvenirs with symmetry and using sparkling rocks. As time goes by, the beauty standard changed. Idealism in 2000 years ago will be very different from the idealism that we are running today, it can be shifted or even totally changed to the opposite. Even so, the meaning of beauty in the human eye never changes.
Figure 3: Colosseum, one of the world's most famous architectures
Mathematics is a factor in shaping beauty. The ratio of gold, symmetry and repetitive patterns can be found in the arts and architecture of a culture. Even the beauty of mathematics can be found in our surroundings such as the shape of leaves, animals, cloud forms etc. which is where beauty becomes part of human life because of the frequent interaction with nature. Just like when we see trees that are bright green in the summer and brownish in the autumn, or the sun set on the horizon, we define it as a form of beauty.
Figure 4: A woman with beautiful eyes
In human culture, beauty is commonly identified with comfort, safety, health and even power. As in the picture above, the woman's face is very symmetrical with fresh and bright skin. Our brain will interpret the image as a beauty and we will assume that a beautiful and beautiful face will make life happier, easier, healthier and more comfortable. This thought is repeated and continues to exist in our lives which eventually forms a rooted culture.
Figure 5: Natural scenery of Indonesia
Every culture will have its own standard of beauty. In Indonesia, beauty is described as stretching nature, diverse cultures and languages, diverse flora and fauna and the natural wealth contained in them. While in most European countries 3 centuries ago, beauty was identical with order, a magnificent palace and sparkling jewelry. In this era, there are several countries such as South Korea that put forward beauty in terms of appearance and sometimes become a requirement to be accepted by the society.
Figure 6: A mother who is carrying her child
Even so, beauty does not have to be mathematical, majestic or pretty. Beauty can be in the form of ideas, thoughts and behaviors, such as mothers who love their children, heroes who struggle to defend the ideas they believe, foods that please the tongue or poetry & beautiful songs that create a feeling of peace. In short, beauty is everything that has value in our life, brings a smile and happiness and able to provide inspiration.
